Strongman

Here is something I finished in late July; however, I just received the O.K. to post it. Anyways, I was asked to draw a cover for a graphic novel coming out in early 2009 called Strongman, written by Charles Soule and art by Allen Gladfelter.

The writer / publisher decided to go in a different route than my cover, but this will be thrown in the back of the book in the pinup section. Below is a compilation of the very rough prelims I sent to the writer, my favorites being both top and bottom left thumbnails.

Anyways, if you are looking for a fun and entertaining read, keep an eye out for the book. Even if the story is not your thing, the artwork is stunning.

A talk about “style”.

I’m sort of tired of this discussion of style. It’s fine how we are defined by it, but to me, it seems so irrelevant to expect someone who isn’t even twenty years-old to have a definitive look to his work that is in no way reminiscent of any artist. It’s only natural for an artist to want to be like their influences, being completely unintentional. The strive to be unique is a common goal among most, however, this preconceived notion that one has to have arrived at that level at the tender age of nineteen is somewhat foolish to think, and almost more limiting than giving it a little more time to let the artist experiment and observe a little more.

Experimentation is key, not limiting yourself to one style is certainly something to strive for, but not always easy to achieve. Deciding that the one style should be dropped is negligent in terms of the artists growth.

The achievement of finding a unique style can not be answered in a day. Everyone knows that a one trick pony is only known for one thing - and that is if anyone can remember him.

More concepts.

Some more designs and concepts for a project of mine.

After finishing the pitch pages for Scout, I went and sketched out 5 pages for a personal comic of mine (unrelated to the one above), but after spending 5 hours on them, I realized the topic and pieces were a waste of time. What makes it worse is the lingering sense of an art block on the horizon.

AVA Concepts.

Along side of the sequential and cover work (will post when I can), I’ve been slowly developing two ideas of mine - this one being tentatively titled “Ava”. Enjoy!

* bucks sketches.

I drew these a week and a bit ago while sitting around at my brother’s workplace. Tea-stain and paper texture done in post. Hope you enjoy. I am off to go color now.

Paint chat.

This summer has been going pretty well, but as of late I’ve done something to my wrist again.  The problem seems to be my downfall, which is unfortunate because it’s making me have to change some plans and all, but it’s for the future, and being able to draw.

Lately i’ve just been messing around in an empty paint chat with a few friends.  The image above is from todays and the other ones are from a week or so back.  Matilda is in there, a potential mini story featuring the lacking-hips lady and the butter face kid.  Who knows, always playing around with ideas.

If you ever want to join in on the fun, drop me a comment and I’ll send the paint chat link through email. I will warn you that as of late I am never on thanks to my wrist.

Knight.

Haven’t been posting much, I have been working on some stuff I can’t really show.  Exciting things, but really daunting as well.  As well as all that, I have some personal things in the works.  I’ve learned that rather than promise and not deliver - it’s just better to surprise when it’s all ready.

Other than working (at both a real job and comics) i’ve been watching a lot of movies - helps get my mind off of the internet and procrastination.  About 12 in 3 days.  Pathetic maybe, but it’s great inspiration.

Hopefully I’ll be posting something tonight in relation to a personal project, until then stare at the pudgy knight.
